Idaho Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN)

Obesity now rivals tobacco as the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States.  The rise of childhood obesity rates will continue to have a major impact on the prevalence of adult obesity, as obesity in childhood and adolescence is a significant risk factor for obesity in adulthood. Being overweight or obese increase the risk of many diseases and chronic health conditions including coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke, Type 2 Diabetes, certain types of cancers, and premature death.

In response to these health issues surrounding obesity, education and intervention strategies are focused on reversing the current trend.  The Idaho Physical Activity and Nutrition program in conjunction with Eastern Idaho Public Health emphasizes environmental approaches that support and reinforce healthy behaviors.

Communities:
Eastern Idaho Public Health partners work with selected communities to find opportunities for improvement in built environments, creating spaces in parks that are accessible to all ages.  The outcome of this work is to ensure that all community members have safe, accessible, and healthy options to be active every day.

Childcare:
Eastern Idaho Public Health partners with Idaho Stars to work with childcare providers to incorporate strategies that keep kids moving and eating healthy in childcare facilities.

Schools:
Eastern Idaho Public Health partners with schools to implement physical activity in a fun an engaging way through playground improvements.
