Eastern Idaho Healthcare Preparedness & Response

Our Missiondisaster response
The U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) leads the country in preparedness, response, and recovery from adverse health effects of emergencies and disasters. ASPR's Healthcare Preparedness Program (HPP) enables the health care delivery system to save lives during emergencies and disaster events that exceed day-to-day capacity and capability of health and emergency response systems. HPP provides federal fundig for the development of healthcare coalitions that incentivize diverse and often competitive health care organizations
to work together.

Eastern Idaho Healthcare Coalition (EIHC) is one such coalition that combines hospitals, EMS, Emergency Management, public health, skilled nursing, long-term care facilities, mental health professionals, public safety, schools, volunteer agencies and others to help communities in the eight county Eastern Idaho Public Health region.

The primary purpose of the EIHC is to build medical surge capabilities and capacities among Eastern Idaho healthcare entities to respond to bioterrorism, infectious disease outbreaks, natural or man-made disasters, and other public health threats and emergencies. The EIHC has the responsibility to plan, train, and exercise together. This will improve the ability of renional healthcare systems to resond and recover from a medical surge event. The EIHC focuses on the following:

  • Awareness of each other's capabilities and capacities;
  • Signed memorandums of understanding/agreement for sharing of resources;
  • Preparedness and response gaps are identified by the group and solutions are found;
  • Redundant interoperable communication tools are available;
  • Planning for the medical needs of at-risk populations in the event of a disaster or public health emergency; and
  • Updating the Regional Healthcare Medical Surge Plan for the region.
